Five Timber Standards Undergo Revision

Tanzania Bureau of Standards is overseeing the revision of five Tanzania Standards for timber.

The Timber Specification Technical Committee met on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 under the chairmanship of Mr. Emmanuel Mwakibinga from Sao Hill Timber Industries, to discuss the proposed changes to the standards, as presented by its secretary, Mr. Josephat Shilogile.

The Head of the Civil Engineering Section under the Engineering Standards Department, Mr. Johannes Maganga said after the meeting that the standards are undergoing normal revision.

“Normally, Tanzania Standards undergo revision after every five years,” said Mr. Maganga, adding that in some instances standards may be revised anytime as demand arises.

He said the five draft revised standards are to be presented to the TBS Executive Council for approval before the end of this year.

The Technical Committee Secretary, Mr. Shilogile mentioned the timber standards under revision as BCDC 6(2957) Timber dimensions for coniferous sawn timber (cypress and pine) – Part 1: Size of sawn and planed timber, BCDC 6(2958), Timber – Determination of the moisture content for physical and mechanical tests, BCDC 6(2959), Timber – Determination of average moisture content of a lot, BCDC 6(2960), Timber – Determination of volumetric shrinkage and BCDC 6(2961), Timber – Determination of volumetric swelling.

The Timber Specification Technical Committee is comprised of eight members, namely Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), National Housing and Building Research Agency (NHBRA), University of Dar es Salaam – College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), National Estates and Designing Company (NEDCO), Sao Hill Timber Industries, Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI), Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources and TBS as a secretariat.
