Hon. Janeth Mbene, Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade
Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has been urged not to compromise with standards when ensuring quality of goods produced within and outside the country.
The Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Honourable Janeth Mbene made the remark recently during her familiarization tour at the TBS Imports Certification offices in Dar es Salaam.
Hon. Mbene said, quality issues need to be handled by following the required procedures and not otherwise; hence TBS officials should stick to those procedures when performing their duties.
“All products should be well checked against standards requirements. This will help to reduce the public outcry on the increase of substandard goods in the market,” she said.
She further said in accomplishing standardization work, TBS needs to work closely with other organizations like Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA), Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC) as their functions are somehow related, something which will reduce confusion and bureaucracy to manufacturers and importers.
However, the Deputy Minister commended TBS for a good job being done in ensuring that all products produced by small, medium and large manufacturers are certified in accordance with the required standards.
Responding to the human resources challenge that TBS is currently facing as addressed earlier by the Director of Testing, Calibration and Packaging Services, Mrs Agnes Mneney who represented the Acting Director General, Hon. Mbene said the Ministry will help solve the issue which seems to be a stumbling block in implementation of quality assurance and standardization activities.
This was Hon. Mbene’s first visit to the Bureau since her appointment to the post.
