The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) started to inspect used motor vehicles in 2002 with the purpose of ensuring that all imported used motor vehicles are roadworthy and conform to the requirements of the relevant Standard. Since then TBS has been obtaining qualified Agents/ Companies to inspect used vehicles on its behalf through the advertised international tenders.
The Inspection of products including used motor vehicles before transported to the country helps not only to know if the vehicles conform to the requirements of the relevant Standard but also helps to protect consumers’ health, environment and local industries against unfair competition in the market due to the importation of substandard products.
The general public and all importers of used motor vehicles are informed that TBS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in which from 1st July, 2015 NIT shall be inspecting all uninspected used motor vehicles imported to Tanzania before entering the market.
