The Government has urged Tanzanians to help speed up the national economy by buying locally manufactured products.

The call was issued by the Director of Trade and Marketing of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Mr. Odilo Majengo, when he graced the ceremony to grant licences and certificates to manufacturers whose products have been verified to conform to national and other standards. The ceremony took place at Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) headquarters in Dar es Salaam recently.

Addressing the manufacturers, Mr. Majengo said the certification they had just acquired enables them to confidently enter local, regional and international markets, calling upon the public to support them and the national economy by buying the certified local products.

“Tanzanians should build a habit of loving their local products,” said Mr. Majengo, adding that by buying locally manufactured and certified products local businesses will flourish thus speeding up the economy and prosperity at individual and national level.

He congratulated the manufacturers for completing the painstaking procedure of certification and urged them to ensure that they are always producing as per the requirements of the standards against which their products have been certified. He warned them that failure to maintain the standards will lead into consequences as per the Standards Act No. 2 of 2009, including but not limited to factory closure.

Overall, 48 licences, certificates and licence extensions were granted during the ceremony, comprising of 39 standards mark licences, seven (7) standards mark licence extensions and two (2) tested products certificates. The products covered include processed foods such as bread, sunflower oil and carbonated soft drinks; chemicals and engineering and textile materials.

TBS operates various certification schemes including the Standards Mark Certification Scheme and the Tested Product Certification Scheme. The Standards Mark Certification Scheme allows manufacturers whose products have conformed to relevant Tanzania standards to use the ‘tbs’ Standards Mark of Quality on their products.

The Tested Product Certification Scheme is a scheme whereby the Bureau has not issued a standard for a product but which otherwise complies with an appropriate standard as specified by the product specification and approved by Specification Approval Committee of the Bureau.
