THE Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Hon Charles Mwijage, has introduced the new Board of Directors for Tanzania Bureau of Standards.

The new board’s chairperson is Prof Makenya Maboko from the University of Dar es Salaam.

Other board members are Prof Preksedis Marko Ndomba (University of Dar es Salaam), Khatibu M Khatibu (Zanzibar Bureau of Standards), Jasson B Bagonza (Ministry of Finance and Planning) and Godfrey Simbeye (Tanzania Private Sector Foundation).

Speaking to the TBS Management during the announcement of the newly appointed board members in Dar es Salaam recently, Hon Mwijage said that TBS cannot distance itself from the country’s move to an industrialized economy, instead it is required to be on the frontline. He urged TBS staff to work hard since the Bureau is supposed to be the spearhead of the expected economic development by ensuring the production of quality and standardized products.

He further urged continued collaboration between TBS and the Fair Competition Commission (FCC) in making sure that the local market is free of counterfeit and substandard products.

As one of the strategies to make sure that all imported products meet the requirements of respective standards, the Minister announced that all importers of clothes, lubricants and foods shall be required to issue a ‘notice of intension ’ to TBS before ordering and importing any products which fall under the three categories.

On his part, Prof Maboko thanked the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency Dr John Pombe Magufuli for the appointment, promising to work tirelessly in accomplishing his responsibilities. Prof Maboko replaces Prof Cuthbert Mhilu whose tenure had expired.

Meanwhile, Minister Mwijage suspended the national standards body’s Director General, Mr Joseph Masikitiko and the Planning, Finance and Administration Manager, Mr Emmanuel Ntelya pending investigations.

The Minister appointed Dr Egid Mubofu, the Head of Chemistry Department at the University of Dar es Salaam as the Bureau’s Acting Director General.
