The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and Zanzibar Bureau of Standards (ZBS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will easy operation of combating substandard products in the mainland and island Tanzania.
The signing ceremony was held recently at the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Dar es Salaam whereas it was witnessed by the Minister of Industry and Trade Hon. Dr. Abdallah Kigoda, his Deputy, Hon. Janet Mbene and Zanzibar Minister of Trade, Industry and Marketing Hon. Nassor Mazrui.
In his speech at the event, Hon. Kigoda said that the two Bureaux are having the same functions but noting that the TBS does not fall under union matters, thus the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has foreseen the importance of establishing its own standards body ‘ZBS’ that shall be performing its responsibilities in the islands but in collaboration with TBS.
Minister Kigoda further said that the signed MoU will increase the capacity of the two bodies in standardization activities as well as controlling the influx of substandard products in the United Republic of Tanzania.
“TBS and ZBS can now start exchanging technical expertise, cooperate in research programmes and dissemination of standardization and quality assurance information to the public for the benefit of the public,” he noted.
For his part Hon Mazrui said that the inked MoU will strengthen the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar as apart from politics, it will also facilitate economic cooperation between the mainland and the Islands.
He added that two parts will now jointly protect their people against substandard products by ensuring that only quality products enter to the market.
Earlier on, the TBS Acting Director General Mr Joseph Masikitiko briefed the Ministers that the MoU was a result of the formed task force launched in Zanzibar by Zanzibar Deputy Minister for Trade, Industry and Marketing, Hon. Thuwaiba Kisasi on 2014-02-09.
Among other things the area of cooperation in the signed document includes the exchanging of staff (Short visits for practical purposes), study tours for staff and Board Members, planning and implementation of Research programmes, dissemination and sharing of information and entering into other forms of collaboration for the mutual benefit of the two Standards bodies.
