Accreditation Status and Information

Metrology Laboratory Accreditation Status
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards Metrology Laboratory has the following functions:

a) Calibration of measurement standards and precision instruments in various fields of measurements;
b) Establishing custody and maintenance of the National Measurement Standards related to all physical parameters, at internationally accepted level of accuracy;
c) Supporting the public through the provision of internationally recognized measurement standards and measurements;
d) Ensuring conformity of the National Measurement Standards (NMSs) with the international measurement standards, which are the quantities and units defined in the International System of Units (SI);
e) Ensuring traceability of the values of the National Measurement Standards (NMSs) to the International System of Units (SI).

Accreditation Status
The Metrology laboratory is continuing to maintain its accreditation status achieved through the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) from December 2006 in the following areas:-
a) Mass
b) Temperature
c) Small volume and
d) Time and frequency measurement
Initial Assessment on Dimension field from this laboratory was performed by the South African Development Community Accreditation Services (SADCAS) in collaboration with the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) from 02 and 03 August, 2010.

The joint SADCAS/SANAS approval committee held on 04 November, 2010, approved and granted accreditation status on Dimensional field to the Laboratory.

Surveillance assessment by SANAS on the laboratory was conducted between 20th and 21st October, 2009 and the laboratory was recommended for continued accreditation status. Next surveillance assessment by SANAS is scheduled to be done on July, 2011.

Chemistry Laboratory Accreditation Status
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) Chemistry Laboratory performs the following functions:

a) Testing of all chemicals, allied products and environmental samples. The samples tested cover a large variety e.g. soaps, detergents, mosquito coils, water, minerals, industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It is well equipped with instruments like the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), Flame Photometer and UV/Visible Spectrophotometer enabling it to give accurate and quick test results;
b) Provides training in product testing related to chemicals and laboratory Quality Management Systems, (ISO 17025);
c) Conducts collaborative environmental research work;
d) Provides consultancy services to industrialists;
e) Is a coordinator for Tanzania Proficiency Testing Scheme (TPTS);
f) Provides Edible Salt Proficiency testing at National and EAC level;
g) Provides Drinking Water Proficiency Testing Scheme at National level;
h) Coordinates SADC Proficiency Testing Scheme;
i) Is a contact point for Testing Technical Sub-Committee for EAC/PTB, SQMT Project;
j) Conducts air quality monitoring.

Accreditation status
The laboratory is accredited by SANAS (South African National Accreditation System) for water, i.e. drinking, mineral and portable water with an accreditation number T0331.

The laboratory is preparing for initial assessment in fuel on the following parameters:
a) Viscosity
b) Density
c) Flash point
d) Distillation

Textile and Leather Laboratory Accreditation Status
The Textile and Leather laboratory was established in 1982, the main functions being to provide test facilities for both textile and leather industries as well as assisting manufacturers through consultancy in improving the quality of their products. In 1990 the condom testing facility was included and became a mini laboratory within the Textile and Leather laboratory.

The laboratory is equipped with modern equipment for testing both the physical and chemical parameters for textiles starting from fibres to fabrics, leather and male latex condoms.

The laboratory accepts work from any source, being government departments, private manufacturers, exporters as well as importers and research institutions. The laboratory also undertakes training to laboratory analysts in good laboratory techniques. All the testing is performed according to relevant Tanzania, foreign or ISO standard testing method.

Among the main textile testing equipment are as follows:

b) Instron tensile testing machine 5566- computerized
c) Labormixer (laboratory fibre blender)
d) Linitest (laboratory dyeing and colour fastness to washing testing machine)
e) Martindale Wear and Abrasion tester
f) Wira cotton fineness meter

h) Shirley Crimp tester
i) Pressley Cotton Fibre Strength tester
j) Uster Evenness tester
k) Cotton trash analyser

For Leather testing, the equipment used to test leather, shoe upper, sole, leather garment and upholstery include the following:
a) Water vapour permeability tester
b) Tensometer
c) Permeometer
d) Penetrometer
e) Flexometer
f) Shrinkage temperature apparatus.

Condom Testing
The Laboratory is also well equipped with condom testing equipment to test the quality of condom. The parameters tested include,
a) Bursting pressure
b) Bursting volume
c) Dimensions (length, width and thickness)
d) Water leakage
e) Package seal
f) Lubricant quantity

Accreditation Status
The condom laboratory is accredited by the South African Accreditation System (SANAS) against ISO/IEC 17025. The scope of accreditation is
a) Bursting pressure and volume
b) Dimensions
c) Package seal

The following tests are done in the Condom testing laboratory. The laboratory has been accredited against ISO 17025. These are:
a) Determination of Condom dimensions (length, width and thickness)
b) Determination of bursting volume and pressure (untreated and oven treated)
c) Package seal integrity
d) Freedom from holes
e) Determination of lubricant quantity
