Market Surveillance scheme

The scheme is implemented by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) with main objective of ensuring that products and services in the Tanzanian market or digital or e-commerce platforms comply with the requirements prescribed in applicable standards and regulations under the Standards Act, Cap. 130. The activities are intended for monitoring and ensuring safety and quality by seizing, recall and disposal of products or prevent services that are likely to cause risks to public health and the environment while promoting consumer welfare and ensuring fair market practices. Market surveillance scheme is undertaken in accordance with a systematic and risk-based surveillance plan implemented through the Bureau’s zonal offices.

The Bureau assists manufacturers, importers, traders and other stakeholders to comply with applicable standards and regulatory requirements. Furthermore, it promotes voluntary compliance and global market integration to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic industries, enhances consumer protection and confidence as well as facilitates international trade by minimizing unnecessary barriers to market access.
