The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has received several prestigious awards in recognition of its outstanding regulatory performance and contribution to quality assurance, public health, and innovation in public service delivery.
African Regulator of the Year Award 2023
In 2023, TBS was awarded the African Regulator of the Year Award, presented by African Leadership Magazine. This award recognized TBS for its exemplary role in setting and enforcing quality standards and for its contribution to strengthening Africa’s business environment. The recognition highlights outstanding regulatory bodies that promote industrial growth, consumer protection, and fair trade across the continent.
Upcoming Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance Institution on Food Safety Award – 2025
On 3 December 2025, TBS was awarded the Upcoming Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance Institution on Food Safety Award. The award was jointly conferred by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the African Union – Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR).
This award recognizes TBS’s crucial role in food safety monitoring and its contribution to the “One Health” approach in combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The recognition highlights TBS’s efforts in developing standards for foodborne risks, establishing integrated foodborne AMR surveillance systems, promoting responsible antimicrobial use, and enhancing food safety to protect public health and facilitate trade.
Best Regulatory Agency of the Year Award – 2025
On 16 December 2025, TBS was awarded the Best Regulatory Agency of the Year 2025, presented under the Public Service Innovation Awards. These awards were held for the first time with the aim of recognizing and promoting innovation, accountability, efficiency, and professionalism in public service delivery. The award underscores TBS’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovative approaches in regulatory service provision.
Certificate of Merit to Director General
TBS, through its Director General Dr. Ashura Katunzi, received a Certificate of Merit from the World Customs Organization (WCO) on 26 January 2026, in recognition of its contribution to protecting public health through effective standards enforcement and surveillance. The Certificate was presented during the 2026 International Customs Day celebrations by the Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Mr. Yusuph J. Mwenda, on behalf of WCO.
This recognition reflects the collective efforts of the Board, Management and all TBS staff in ensuring that products in the market meet required standards and are safe for consumers. It strengthens the reputation of TBS both nationally and internationally and opens opportunities for further cooperation with global partners. The award also highlights Tanzania’s commitment to public health protection and the promotion of safe trade.
