Accredited Laboratories
Accreditation Status and Information
In order to demonstrate technical competency and produce precise and accurate tests and calibration results, Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has embarked on a programme to ensure that all its laboratories are accredited by the internationally recognized Accreditation Body, South African Development Community Accreditation Services (SADCAS). Currently, the following laboratories are accredited:
1. Metrology Laboratories
Metrology laboratories have continued to maintain accreditation status achieved through the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) and later SADCAS from December 2006 in the following areas:-
a) Mass;
b) Temperature;
c) Small volume;
d) Dimension;
e) Time and Frequency; and
f) Pressure
2. Chemistry Laboratory
The laboratory was accredited by SANAS and currently SADCAS in water and fuel matrices.
Parameters measured in water are:
a) pH
b) Calcium
c) Alkalinity as CaCO3
d) Total dissolved solids
e) Total hardness as CaCO3
f) Electric conductivity
g) Fluoride
h) Sodium
i) Potassium

n) Lead
o) Nickel
p) Cadmium
q) Chromium
Parameters measured in fuel are:
a) Viscosity;
b) Density;
c) Research Octane Number (RON);
d) Flash point; and
e) Distillation.
3. Electrical Laboratory
The laboratory is accredited by SADCAS in conductor resistance parameter in electric cables.
4. Building and Construction Laboratory
The laboratory is accredited by SADCAS in cement in the following physical parameters:
a) Initial setting time;
b) Soundness;
c) Early compressive strength; and
d) Standard compressive strength.
5. Mechanical Laboratory
The laboratory is accredited by SADCAS in the following parameters:
a) Vickers;
b) Rockwell; and
c) Brinell hardness.
6. Food Laboratory
The laboratory is accredited by SADCAS in the following parameters:
a) Maize flour – aflatoxin;
b) Honey – moisture and HMF;
c) Pasteurized milk – coliforms, E. Coli and total plate count;
d) Fish and fishery products – total plate count, coliforms, E. Coli, S aureus, salmonella, V Cholerae, V parahaemolyticus; and
